A Virginia arrest-warrant inquiry starts with the issuing city or county, not a single list that clears the whole state. Chesterfield publishes warrants from its police records system; Newport News has a city outstanding-warrant service. Use a notice, citation, court reference or known agency to choose the correct locality. If the locality is unknown, resolve it before attributing a same-name result to a person.
Write down the warrant or case number, issuing court, name as displayed and the date you checked. The useful next question is whether the responsible agency can confirm that particular order’s current status. A screenshot of an old list is not a current verification, even if it appears on an official domain.
Chesterfield warns that its report may have gaps or quickly changing information. Warrants meeting certain criteria are excluded from publication but remain active for service. Blank fields and a race field marked U mean undocumented information. Neither a missing entry nor a partially completed row establishes that the warrant was withdrawn or that there is no warrant elsewhere.
For Chesterfield information, use the police non-emergency number 804-748-1251. The official page directs people turning themselves in to Chesterfield County Jail, 6900 Mimms Drive, Chesterfield, VA 23832. If the matter concerns you, consult your lawyer about responding and verify current instructions with the agency. Do not ask a friend to confront or detain someone identified in a list.
Newport News’s outstanding-warrant page links its active-warrant application and explains last-name-letter navigation. Its coverage is the City of Newport News. The listed Fugitive Apprehension Unit is 757-928-4289; non-emergency police services are 757-928-4100. Select the official View Active Warrants link rather than relying on a copied list that may omit the date or source.
If you find a plausible match, give the agency the displayed reference and ask it to verify identity, issuing court and whether the warrant is still outstanding. If no entry appears, explain exactly which city list you checked. The safe conclusion is that the public search did not locate an entry, not that the person is cleared throughout Virginia.
Virginia’s Case Status and Information page links a statewide service covering adult criminal information in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts, criminal and traffic cases in General District Courts and select Circuit Courts. Locality-based district and circuit services also permit searches by name, case number or hearing date. Those are case-information systems, not a certification that every arrest warrant is publicly displayed.
When a docket refers to a warrant, recall, dismissal or later order, retain the exact case and entry date. Ask the issuing court’s clerk for the public order if you need a copy, and specify whether it must be certified. Copy charges, permitted access and delivery depend on the holding court and document; the statewide portal does not quote a single warrant-copy price or turnaround.
If the court display and a police list disagree, ask the court and warrant agency to reconcile the order and case number. Do not assume that paying an unrelated balance, viewing a case or filing a records request changes the warrant. Only the responsible authorities can confirm the current procedural status.
Virginia State Police’s SP-167 is a consent-based criminal-history request with notarization and mail processing; it is not a live local warrant confirmation service. A request receipt or a history response should not be presented as proof that an active warrant has been recalled. Use the agency handling the warrant for that question and the recipient’s specified history product for a background-check requirement.
An outstanding warrant is not a conviction. Confirm the identity and current order before relying on a name match, and obtain qualified legal advice about a warrant involving you. For an apparent clerical error, preserve the notice, case number and any signed order and ask the issuing clerk or agency how it should be corrected. Do not alter a downloaded list or use an online absence to disregard a known court date.
Public warrant pages are useful leads precisely because their limits are visible. Keep the locality and timestamp with any research note, avoid republishing unnecessary personal details, and direct urgent safety concerns to law enforcement rather than trying to investigate or serve a warrant yourself.
